YASTAY - ARGENTINA 13

The Ubuntu team is excited to announce our commitment to rescue 7 tigers, 2 ligers and 4 lions from a closed down zoo in Argentina.

We now have successfully started the relocation of these animals with two successful operations, Melena and Tika.

The rest of the Argentina 13 will continue to be relocated to the Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary throughout the year.

THE TRIPLETS- BELLA-NTOMBI, THANDI AND ZAMBA-NAVID

NAME OF RESCUES: Zamba-Navid, Bella-Nthombi, Thandi

AGE: 5 months on arrival
ORIGIN: South Africa
RESCUED FROM: Breeding Farm
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND?

Zamba, Thandi and Ntombi arrived at Ubuntu during November

2018 as young cubs. The Ubuntu team became was made aware of their plight, having been rejected by their mother and the owner indecisive about their future. On lion breeding farms, young lionesses get pregnant at a too young age, and then does not know what to do with her cubs.

In wild free roaming populations, lionesses will only become "mature" at 3+ years, and by then have experienced cubs born in the pride, how they are taken care of and as nieces and aunts, played a part in the upbringing of young cubs.

On breeding farms they do not have that opportunity or experience, and are put with males as early as 2 years of age. Immature, inexperienced and frightened of the new cubs, rejection often is the result.

Worst of it is that if the young lioness rejects her cubs a 2nd time...she is put up for sale as a hunting trophy for the pathetic lion killers in the world.

Team Ubuntu devised a plan...and we got them out and away from the breeding farm and placed in our care.

Thandi and Ntombi will never face that fate at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary, where we have a strict no breeding policy. They are already on contraceptives and in due time will be sterilized. This means we have to monitor their weight carefully, ensure they get adequate exercise and enrichment.

Zamba is an absolute gem and we believe he is a "healer" of humans. His gentle and kind nature is proof that Zamba has a distinct purpose in life, and since his arrival at Ubuntu he has touched and healed many human souls.

Thandi is "Miss Mischievous", she is always on the "prowl' for a victim to stalk and tackle....much to the discontent of Zamba and Ntombi. No place, time or event is sacred for Thandi...if the opportunity presents itself...she will make full use of it. Her other trademark is "lion kisses" which she generously shares with Jurg and the team...get a wet snotty kiss through the fence is her way of saying "Welcome and where's my food?"

Ntombi is a reserved girl...she believes she is royalty, and act as such. No snotty kisses like Thandi, that is way below Ntombi's standards...she will look at you over her nose...her yellow eyes piercing into your soul, and perfect "make up" and beautiful eye lashes, for the mere mortal human objects of desire...but simply unachievable.

And back to Zamba...the most beautiful young lion male...his presence always there for us to feel...his gentle eyes and nature, but still a lion. We cannot wait for him to grow into a mature adult male.

The three have many nicknames...the Hooligan Squad or Three Muskateers are most commonly used...well that is until they do something extremely naughty (which happens often) and then their other names will surface...but always with respect and love. They are simply to sweet and beautiful to be cross with. Sharing our lives with them, and the other lions and tigers at Ubuntu, is a privilege and an honor. They are our reason for getting up every morning to face another day's challenges...our feline family...our oxygen and our heartbeat.

MELENA

NAME OF RESCUE: Melena
AGE: 6 years
ORIGIN: Argentina
RESCUED FROM: Abandoned Zoo in Santiago Ciudad
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND?

Around the year 2005, local police in the northern province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, received a call about a group of big cats held in horrible living conditions belonging to a

traveling circus.

During the raid, officials were shocked when they found a large number of tigers and lions in an extremely malnourished state. They were locked up in different compartments in smelly circus wagons, dirty and with flies everywhere.

The state vets feared for their lives, especially when it concerned the lion cubs. Authorities ordered an immediate removal and ordered the cats to be brought to the local Municipal Zoo. They expected the

cubs would not make it. But thanks to Zoo´s caretakers doing everything within their reach, the health situation of most of them improved. However, the Zoo closed down and an urgent

home had to be found for these Cats.

Years of battle followed, until the then newly assumed mayor of Santiago, Norma Fuentes finally decided to bring them over to South Africa together with the unstoppable effort of her right hand, Fernanda Navelino. Unfortunately one lion, Tomasac could not make the trip, she died a few months prior to the rescue.

On Friday 16 March, 2019 after a grueling 80 hour flight Melena and Tika set paws on South African soil, on the final leg to their new permanent loving home at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary NPC. Their relocation was achieved through amazing collaboration between authorities in Santiago del Estero, in particular the Mayor Norma Fuentes, and the Ubuntu team.

As a result of years of incorrect nourishment it took the Ubuntu team weeks to get Melena to eat properly again, pick up weight and becoming a lion in Africa. As a result of his years in a small cage, and we will never know what else he suffered through, Melena carried a lot of emotional scars. He stressed easily, was very uncertain of himself and did not have the authority of a fully grown male lion...but with persistence, lots of love and the support of Dr Peter Caldwell, Melena, today is an authoritative and confident lion...very full of himself and quite the diva at Ubuntu.

His food need be prepared in a very specific way by the Ubuntu "slaves" and he always roars first and last, he loves to scare new team members with a jump and roar at the fence. And we can see the mischievous look in his eyes when he gave the stupid "hooman slaves" the fright of their lives!! What an inspiring turn around and a massive privilege to share our lives with this beautiful lion...Melena

TIKA

NAME OF RESCUE: Tika

AGE: 18 years

ORIGIN: Argentina

RESCUED FROM: Abandoned Zoo in Santiago Ciudad

HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND?

Along with Melena, Zuka & Secu; Tika came from a closed down Zoo in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. She was part of the group of Big Cats held in horrible conditions that belonged to a Traveling Circus. Alongside Melena, Zuka & Secu – Tika was rescued during the raid by Local Police in the Northern Province Santiago del Estero, Argentina. They were all extremely malnourished & locked up in different compartments on a filthy Circus wagon. The state vets weren’t sure if these cats would make it & ordered a immediate removal of these animals.

They were then taken to the local Municipal Zoo. However, the Zoo closed down & a urgent HOME was needed elsewhere. Years of battle followed, until the then newly assumed mayor of Santiago, Norma Fuentes finally decided to bring them over to South Africa together with the unstoppable effort of her right hand, Fernanda Navelino.

On Friday 16 March, 2019 after a grueling 80 hour flight Tika & Melena set paws on South African soil, on the final leg to their new permanent loving home at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary NPC. Their relocation was achieved through amazing collaboration between authorities in Santiago del Estero, in particular the Mayor Norma Fuentes, and the Ubuntu team.

And now, 2 years later at 20 years old this girl is still going strong & our Team is in awe of her majestic beauty! As most of you know by now, Tika was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel in her front paw earlier in 2020 and Dr Caldwell has her on daily medication for this. She has had her health obstacles, however with Dr Caldwell & the Ubuntu Team giving her the required supplements & care – Tika is one beautiful Tiger Queen enjoying her life to the fullest. Tika has reserved the right to her royal title as Queen – and don’t you dare forget it

ADAM - THE ORIGINAL RESCUE

NAME OF RESCUE: Adam
AGE: 12 years

ORIGIN: South Africa
RESCUED FROM: Breeding Farm
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND/STORY?

Adam was rescued by Team Ubuntu and a group of Salesforce volunteers from a lion hunting farm in the Free State Province. He was used a breeding male and lived happily with his own pride of four lionesses.

That is until the farm owner in his greedy hunt for profits and exploitation of lions, decided to kill all four Adam's females in front of his eyes. The reason, the sick and terrible inhumane industry selling lion skeletons to Chinese markets.

Adam's only saving grace was that his life was closely followed by the woman who raised him, and had since turned reporter and activist against lion hunting, lion bone exporting and all forms of animal abuse.

Adam's case was quite unique in that a permit for his 1) euthanasia and 2) a transport permit were issued. In a race against time we managed to get him out of the farm with literally hours to spare before his planned death. He arrived at Ubuntu, severely traumatized and not trusting humans. But, as with all animals at Ubuntu, Adam received special treatment and attention and over a period of two years, Jurg managed to build up his confidence...and today Adam is a proud, dominant male...and very protective of his new girl, Eve.

As the saying goes... "We may not have made a difference in world...but we did make the world of difference for Adam".

EVE-FLORIA

NAME OF RESCUE: Eve-Floria
AGE: 3 years
ORIGIN: South Africa
RESCUED FROM: Breeding Farm Limpopo province
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND?

Eve was rescued from another lion breeder and hunting operator in Limpopo Province. She was destined to be a breeding female and if not producing enough cubs, would've ended in the gun sights of a so called hunter. With international support, Eve was rescued and introduced to Adam. Although much younger than Adam, he immediately fell in love with this beautiful lion girl...and today the two are inseparable. He even allows her to take food first, and today still he follows her wherever she goes.

This is truly another remarkable story, of a never "give up" attitude by team Ubuntu, the Universe smiling on Adam and giving us that few hours we needed to get him out of the hunter's hands, and then the most beautiful relationship he has with young Eve.

SECU

NAME OF RESCUE: Secu

AGE: ±10 years

ORIGIN: Argentina

RESCUED FROM: Abandoned Zoo in Santiago Ciudad

HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND?

In May 2019 Secu & Zuka left the closed down Zoo in Santiago del Estero to their forever home at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa.

Their rescue came shortly after the rescue of Melena earlier in 2019 – Zuka & Secu’s rescue had been one of our most urgent & risky ones yet.

A few weeks prior to their rescue, Zuka started eating less and less - despite all efforts from the Municipality vet changing her diet several times.

Unfortunately, like Melena she spent a huge part of her life in a Circus, where she had developed an anorexic eating disorder as a result of severe malnutrition as a cub.

“She would not have lasted another week” was stated after Zuka arrived safely at Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, Secu only enjoyed his new life for a little over a year. His first years in the circus as a malnourished cub took its toll. He had the opportunity to be a lion in Africa, where he belonged.

And he left as a lion from Africa.

He brought so much to Ubuntu and left with a legacy and a permanent place in our hearts. He may be gone, but he will always be in our hearts and part of Ubuntu.

Zuka has been adjusting well to her new life at the Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary. She has been placed on a nutritious diet, filled with required supplements as prescribed by our Vet. She loves her very own African Bush territory & has build a trusting relationship with our Team. We should mention that, she has allot of fun showing them teeth & giving them Lion growls at food time – just to be sure they KNOW she will NOT be sharing with anyone.

Zuka’s health has improved allot over the past year & her feisty personality has stolen the hearts of MANY Ubuntuneers.

She has become a true African Lion Queen..

We would like to give a HUGE thank you to Santiago de Estero for the collaboration & ensuring that these Lions made it safely to their forever home at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary. We have a big appreciation for their commitment to the rescue of these animals

JACARANDA ANGELS

NAME OF RESCUE : Mufasa, Mia, Maya, Macey, Sahara

AGE : 15 - 16 months on arrival
ORIGIN : UKRAINE
RESCUED FROM : Private Breeders & Roadside Zoo's in the Ukraine
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND? : The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation rescued the 5 cubs from private breeders and roadside zoos in Ukraine. To relocate the 5 cubs was quite expensive and it had to be done in a tight time frame. Mazda SA donated the final amount needed to relocate the cubs after hearing about their plight on a local radio station, Jacaranda FM’s “Good Morning Angels” program, and also supplied the vehicles to transport the cubs from OR Tambo International Airport to Ubuntu wildlife Sanctuary. The cubs arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on 11 December 2019, extremely tired, stressed and dehydrated. The 3 hour trip to Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary was stressful but the cubs arrived safely. Unfortunately, Maya hurt her paws badly on the crates and was not able to walk for more than a week and some of the other cubs also had minor injuries. Fortunately, Maya and all the cubs made a full recovery and the five cubs took to their new camp as if they had been born in Africa.

COLON | MAXIMA-KANYA

AGE : 15 years on arrival
ORIGIN : La Plata, Argentina
RESCUED FROM : Zoo, La Plata
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND? :

Colón (Now Maxima-Kanya) was only three months old when she was brought to the Municipal Zoo of la Plata, Province of Buenos Aires.

She was bartered for another animal from a different zoo.

Together with Dhara, the white tiger and Pelusa, the African elephant, she became one of the star attractions of the Zoo at la Plata.

Unfortunately, Dhara died in May 2018, & Pelusa a month later.

The Zoo authorities decided to close down the Zoo & changed the Zoo into a Park for only indigenous animals only.

One by one the exotic animals were transferred. Only a few were left & Colón was one of them.

When our Ubuntu team heard about her situation, we immediately knew that we would give Colon a forever home at our Sanctuary.

Unfortunately, by the time the mayor accepted our offer, the economic crisis in Argentina got worse and there were no funds left to pay for her trip.

With help of the Wildlife Advocates Foundation a sponsor was found in the Netherlands (The Rotterdam Zoo), making it possible to secure her rescue & relocation all the way to South Africa!

Our Team would like to express sincere gratitude for the collaboration of Teams to ensure that she had a safe journey to Ubuntu.

Maxima-Kanya was VERY shy & wary in her first few months at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary. She needed time to build a trusting relationship with our Team & get used to her new territory. She loved the African Bush & all the hiding spots in her enclosure – giving her ample space to move around as she pleases.

After a few months & settling into her new environment, this Tiger Queen developed quite the feisty personality & our Team couldn’t be happier with her improvement. She takes no nonsense from her neighbors, gets very demanding at food time & of course is very curios when the Team is busy working in the Sanctuary.

She still loves hiding BUT will now pounce out when you turn your back – trying to give you scare! And believe us, she will be upset if you don's react accordingly
