ADAM - THE ORIGINAL RESCUE

NAME OF RESCUE: Adam
AGE: 12 years

ORIGIN: South Africa
RESCUED FROM: Breeding Farm
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND/STORY? Adam's situation was brought to our attention by a good friend who actually raised Adam as a cub. She knew about the dire situation he was in facing certain death in a matter of weeks. The 4 females that were with him had already been killed for their skins and bones and he was due for the bullet. At this stage, we were not prepared, no camp, no funds and no vet on call. The Ubuntu project was supposed to only kick off with the Argentina rescue. But Jurg Olsen fought the permits through, finished a camp in record time, got inspections done and drove the 600kms with a bunch of Salesforce volunteers who had no knowledge what they were doing or getting themselves into. Arriving at the breeding farm we found the vet to be totally out of her league and had to arrange another vet, darted, loaded Adam in the dark and drove back through the night with him back to Ubuntu.

As the saying goes... "We may not have made a difference in world...but we did make the world of difference for Adam".

UKRAINE 5

NAME OF RESCUE : Lion-El, Sandra, Maya, Carmen, UmaAGE : 15 - 16 months on arrival
ORIGIN : UKRAINE
RESCUED FROM : Private Breeders & Roadside Zoo's in the Ukraine
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND? : The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation rescued the 5 cubs from private breeders and roadside zoos in Ukraine. To relocate the 5 cubs was quite expensive and it had to be done in a tight time frame. Mazda SA donated the final amount needed to relocate the cubs after hearing about their plight on a local radio station, Jacaranda FM’s “Good Morning Angels” program, and also supplied the vehicles to transport the cubs from OR Tambo International Airport to Ubuntu wildlife Sanctuary. The cubs arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on 11 December 2019, extremely tired, stressed and dehydrated. The 3 hour trip to Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary was stressful but the cubs arrived safely. Unfortunately, Maya hurt her paws badly on the crates and was not able to walk for more than a week and some of the other cubs also had minor injuries. Fortunately, Maya and all the cubs made a full recovery and the five cubs took to their new camp as if they had been born in Africa.

COLON | KANYA-MAXIMA

AGE : 15 years on arrival
ORIGIN : La Plata, Argentina
RESCUED FROM : Zoo, La Plata
HOW DID YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THIS CAT/BACKGROUND? : Kanya was rescued from a zoo closing down in in La Plata, Argentina. Kanya arrived at Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary on 14 December 2019. Her relocation was made possible with the assistance of Wildlife advocates Foundation and other donors. Having been kept in a small enclosure she found her new large natural camp at Ubuntu quite intimidating, and it took her a few days to gather the confidence to investigate her new surroundings, meet the neighbours and feel the African sun on her skin. However, once she experienced the wonders of trees, bush and brush, being able to hide and stalk and the amazing feeling of sunshine and rain, her natural instincts kicked in and she even caught an unsuspecting hare who wandered into her camp.
